Procedure
Information
Your orthodontist will take bite
impressions of your mouth so a lab can create an
Invisalign system uniquely suited for your
orthodontic goals. The lab will create 12 to 48
aligners for you. In certain situations, teeth that
are not initially good candidates may benefit from
wearing metal braces for several months, and then
switching to Invisalign® afterward.
Before
your aligners are worn, you may need enamel
reduction, the removal of some tooth enamel to make
space for shifting teeth. Some patients need small
bumps installed onto teeth so the aligners can be
adjusted on these points.
Aligners must be
worn 20 to 22 hours a day to be effective. They will
move your teeth through the appropriate placement of
controlled force. At each stage, only certain teeth
are allowed to move, and these movements are
determined by the orthodontic treatment plan for
that particular stage. Regular dentist or
orthodontist visits should be scheduled every 6 to 8
weeks.
Risks/Complications/Side Effects
Invisalign
patients should brush and floss multiple times each
day to deter tooth decay and gum disease. If you
lose an aligner, and it has to be replaced, your
orthodontic plan can be thrown off. Some risks and
complications include: tooth decay, white
decalcification marks, jaw problems, temporary
speech impediment, tenderness, root resorption, and
teeth moving out of position after treatment ends
After
Care
When aligners are worn, sugar intake
should be limited, and patients must brush and floss
more often than normal. After treatment, some
patients must wear a retainer for an indefinite time
to keep teeth aligned.
