What is Surrogacy?
Traditional Gestational Surrogacy is utilized by couples
where the woman may have had trouble conceiving, a series of miscarriages, a
partial hysterectomy or she may have other medical conditions that decrease her
chances for carrying a baby to term. In these instances the woman has viable
eggs but simply needs another female to carry her baby to full term.
How is it conducted?
It is important that you have an identifiable medical reason
for surrogacy. Based on the test results, the ART specialists will provide
a comprehensive report indicating if he or she feels a surrogate transfer will
work or if perhaps a donor egg might be required. The report also details when
stimulation for both the genetic mother and the surrogate can begin. If the
woman has any conditions that prevent one from predicting cycle times, we
recommend purchasing a basal body thermometer and keeping an accurate
temperature count for one month and sending us this data and then continue
keeping track for a second month.
One has the option to start the fertility medications
locally or in India.
It is significantly cheaper in India
and the quality of the drugs are the same. Your case manager
will discuss this with you further. If you are getting a donor egg, the
medication costs are included with the donor.
The ART specialist will send a prescription for the genetic
mother's medications or we will arrange for the genetic mother to come to India
just before menses begin so that she can start taking the medications.
We will also coordinate dates and times for the surrogate
from the moment the genetic mother's menses begin. Should the genetic mother
decide to stay in her own country to start her fertility medication this is a
sample outline of dates and events.
Day one of menses starts birth control pills, inform the
hospital, get base line blood test. Continue birth control pills throughout
month. Order fertility medication (or go to India);
Day 18 of birth control pills starts Leuprolide Acetate subcutaneous daily.
First day of second menses, start the gondaotropin
injections (InjGonal-F and hMG daily. Blood test and Ultrasounds are required
on day 1, 5, 7, and 9 in the home country. Day 9 fly to India,
arrive evening day 10Day 11 you will have a blood tests, ultrasound, X-ray, and
EKG. Meet with the doctor, tour the clinic, and meet the anesthesiologist.
Genetic father will give a sample at the clinic. Night 11 take trigger shot.
Day 12 is a free day. On Day 13 is the egg retrieval, this is a general anesthesia
procedure that last around 20-30 minutes. A second sperm sample is collected as
well. After the procedure and recovery at the clinic, rest at the hotel and
local touring for next 36-48 hours. On Day 15 is the embryo transfer to the
surrogate. The couple may return home on the night of the 15th or the
16th.
Sperm is collected by ejaculation. However, the doctor can
perform one of several surgical methods of sperm collection if the male patient
is unable to ejaculate due to obstruction of the reproductive tract. Eggs are
harvested from the female under trans-vaginal ultrasound guidance or by
laparoscopy.
In the IVF laboratory, a single sperm is injected directly
into the cytoplasm of a mature egg with the help of a micro manipulator.
Fertilized eggs are allowed to mature into embryos, and then they are
transferred into the woman's uterus at the appropriate time in her menstrual
cycle.
Notification of the conception results are emailed to the intended parents 8-10
days following the embryo transfer. Payment for a surrogate is due ONLY
WHEN there is a confirmed surrogacy.
What post operative care?
The birth mother will deliver her baby at an excellent
private hospital. If the surrogate is carrying twins the mother will
undergo caesarean delivery.
The mother will not bond with the child but breast milk from
the mother will be pumped and given to the baby (or babies).
We encourage the parent(s) to come to India
a few weeks before conception but if that is not possible only one parent is
required to help with the necessary paperwork.
